HOLY COW! 9405 HAS SCORED A NELSON - November 6, 1997

She's done it! Stellenbosch supercow 9405 has scored a Nelson!

The remarkable cow with the unremarkable name has broken a world record by producing 111,2 litres of milk in just one day.

This is nearly two litres more than the former world record of 109,3 litres, and way above the 30 or 40 litres a day that your average bovine produces.

Cow 9405 first hit the headlines last week when she topped the 100-litre mark, making her the first cow in the country to achieve this status, and one of only four "100-litre" cows in the world.

And the resultant media attention seems to have done the trick, edging her into super star status as following the Cape Times' publication of her munificence, radio stations, international wire agencies and an international TV station called for details on where to find the super-moo.

Since she topped the 100-litre mark, 9405's owner and breeder, Mr Ludwig van Deventer of Bloemendal farm, has been waiting to see if her massive milk yield was simply a flash in the milkcan.

"She kept on going up, then on Monday she scored a Nelson." The bulk recording unit witnessed her production, so it's official.

His dairy, manager Mr Nico Brummer, said 9405 - named after the year and month she was born - had taken a dip to 89 litres in the hot weather.

"Cows are sensitive and their production goes down if it's hot. Then she went back to 100 litres and started going up steadily - on Monday it jumped to 111."

Ironically, Van Deventer is a wine farmer who bought a few cows for manure for his vineyards. Then he tried breeding using unconventional criteria for the selection of stud bulls.

"I won't say what I did or the industry will laugh at me."

Webmaster's note:
I find it amazing that everyone is going on about this as if the cow is happy to have achieved this highly unnatural and probably uncomfortable milk production level, which has been inflicted on her through artificial means.
